Herdade Monte Silveira

Herdade Monte Silveira farms more than 700 hectares in Beira Baixa. It has been in certified organic production since 1999, and has formally practised regenerative agriculture since 2017. The estate treats the soil as a living being, and that idea sits under everything it does. Rotational grazing runs across the agrosilvopastoral land. A range of livestock breeds moves through extensive pastures in a pattern that mimics the grazing of wild herbivores. The animals feed the soil, stimulate plant growth, cycle nutrients and add to biodiversity, while living at rhythms that suit them. Of the land, 500 hectares are montado, a silvopastoral system. A further 200 hectares carry cereals, legumes, almond groves and olive groves. The farm's certified olive oil has been recognised by the World Olive Center for Health. Managing the montado this way supports ecosystem functions and services, and soil health, pasture condition and animal welfare all get close attention. Biodiversity is central here. The farm shelters everything from cultivated crops to native wildflowers, and from insects and birds to mammals. Its regenerative practices actively add to that richness. The estate also takes part in research and innovation projects, working to optimise crop yields, improve soil health and bring in technologies that support the wellbeing of the ecosystem. What it learns goes back to the wider agricultural community.
