Herdade Monte Silveira is a 700+ hectare farm in Beira Baixa practicing certified organic and regenerative agriculture since 1999, integrating rotational grazing, agroforestry, and biodiversity conservation. It operates as a living example of the deep connection between human stewardship and the natural world.
Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Beira Baixa, Portugal, Herdade Monte Silveira is a pioneering farm spanning over 700 hectares dedicated to sustainable and regenerative land management. Operating in certified organic production since 1999 and formally practising regenerative agriculture since 2017, the estate treats the soil as a living being — the foundation of all its activities.
At the heart of Monte Silveira's regenerative journey is the integration of rotational grazing across its agrosilvopastoral landscape. Diverse livestock breeds rotate through extensive pastures, mimicking the natural grazing patterns of wild herbivores. By doing so, the animals nourish the soil, stimulate plant growth, cycle nutrients, and contribute to biodiversity — all while thriving in conditions that respect their natural rhythms.
The estate encompasses 500 hectares of montado silvopastoral system and 200 hectares dedicated to cereals, legumes, almond groves, and olive groves. Its certified olive oil has received recognition from the World Olive Center for Health. Sustainable montado management fosters ecosystem functions and services, while careful attention is given to soil health, pasture conditions, and animal welfare.
Biodiversity is a central value: Monte Silveira serves as a sanctuary for a wide variety of flora and fauna, from cultivated crops to native wildflowers, and from insects and birds to mammals. The farm's regenerative practices actively enhance this natural richness.
Beyond production, Monte Silveira engages in research and innovation projects aimed at optimising crop yields, improving soil health, and integrating technologies that promote ecosystem wellbeing.
