Renewables body slams new IMI tax rule for wind and solar farms

Topicshome electrification

APREN, the Portuguese renewable energy association, has criticised a Tax Authority circular that now treats wind and solar farms, including turbines and panels, as single industrial properties subject to municipal property tax (IMI). The rule, formalised on 27 July, replaces criteria used since 2021 following a Supreme Administrative Court ruling. APREN argues the sector already bears heavy taxation, including a permanent contribution unique in Europe, and warns the change will raise costs for an industry central to energy security and climate goals. It proposes compensating municipalities through revenue-sharing rather than taxing production equipment.
