Report warns growing car sizes threaten European road safety

A report by Transport & Environment and the Clean Cities Campaign, which includes ZERO, finds that new cars sold in Europe keep growing in length, width and height, despite shrinking households and low occupancy rates. If unchecked, this trend could cost European cities 8.5% to 14% of on-street parking by 2040, cause hundreds more annual road deaths among pedestrians and cyclists, and add billions in extra energy costs for both electric and combustion vehicles. The report contrasts this with a 'right-sizing' scenario returning vehicles to 2015 dimensions, and ZERO calls for immediate policies to promote safer, more compact and efficient cars.
