Resende mayor calls for better conditions for young farmers

At a session of the AJAP-led Rural Innovation Challenges project in Resende, mayor Fernando Silvério argued that generational renewal in agriculture requires broader conditions beyond farming policy, including good schools, healthcare and economic opportunities in rural areas. He noted Resende had 1,076 applications for young farmer support, the highest number in the Tâmega e Sousa region. The municipality has introduced measures such as extra support for Arouquesa cattle producers, full funding of animal health costs from 2026, better rural roads, and promotion of local products like cherries, blueberries, wine and jams.
