Restored wolf pit in Pinhel opens with life-size wolf sculptures and a new walking trail
A historic wolf-trapping pit in the Ermo das Águias rewilding area, in Pinhel, was reopened on 18 October after restoration by Rewilding Portugal with the municipality. It is a "goat-bait" type, unusual because most known pits are in the mountainous north, above the Douro. Inside, Rui Miragaia installed life-size sculptures of wolves hunting an ibex, and a new walking trail leads to the site. The work forms part of the LIFE LUPI LYNX project on coexistence with the Iberian wolf and lynx south of the Douro. Regular guided visits are planned.
