Scientists say deep-sea mining risks cannot yet be assessed

Marine biologist Diva Amon told the "Deep Sea Dialogues" event, held alongside the International Seabed Authority's 31st session in Kingston, that it is nearly impossible to assess deep-sea mining's biodiversity impact while most of the ocean floor remains unexplored. Speaking from the research vessel R/V Falkor, she cited an ongoing expedition off Trinidad and Tobago that keeps finding unknown species. She and fellow researcher Anna Metaxas also noted rising deep-sea temperatures and widespread pollution even in remote areas. The ISA continues negotiating mining regulations this week in Kingston.
