Three Porto schools compete to recycle the most glass this winter
Three Porto schools — Campinas, João de Deus and Fontes Pereira de Melo — will compete from 1 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 to deposit the most glass packaging. Pupils living in Porto use personal cards at 19 smart glass banks in the Boavista pilot area, so deposits count automatically towards pupil, class and school rankings. The winning school can receive up to €2,500, and top classes and pupils also win prizes. If the pilot area reaches a 75% glass collection rate, up to €10,000 goes to two local charities. Portugal collected 61% of glass packaging in 2024, against an EU average of 82.2%.
