Vialonga brewery installs €33.5m heat pump to cut carbon

Central de Cervejas e Bebidas has commissioned a heat pump system at its Vialonga brewery, in partnership with Siemens Portugal, to cut CO2 emissions linked to thermal energy by around 50%, equivalent to 7,381 tonnes a year. The €33.5 million project, part-funded with €8.8 million from the Recovery and Resilience Plan, recovers surplus heat from refrigeration processes and uses renewable electricity, replacing part of the gas-fired steam boilers. It is part of a wider €135 million decarbonisation effort since 2017. A thermal battery, developed with EDP/Rondo, is planned for 2028, with the brewery aiming for carbon-neutral production by 2030.
