Zero and Oikos urge Portugal to set a fossil fuel phase-out date before COP31
Environmental groups Zero and Oikos have asked the Portuguese government to commit to a timetable for leaving fossil fuels, including a fixed end date for fossil gas in electricity generation, days before the COP31 climate summit opens in Antalya, Turkey, on 9 November. They also want a multi-year climate finance plan, a Lusophone Climate Fund and more debt-for-climate swaps, starting with São Tomé and Príncipe after the Cape Verde precedent. At home, they say the Climate Action Council is not yet operational and the roadmap to reach carbon neutrality by 2045 is still missing. Both groups will attend the talks, which they hope will focus on implementation.
