ZERO opposes expansion of Barreiro liquid bulk terminal

Environmental association ZERO has issued an unfavourable opinion on the planned expansion of the Barreiro Liquid Bulk Terminal, whose public consultation closed on 19 June. The project would raise storage capacity by about 25%, from 173,000 m³ to 216,617 m³, mainly for petrol and diesel, with a lifespan reaching mid-century. ZERO argues this contradicts national and EU climate goals and the Climate Framework Law, and that the environmental study fails to justify the expansion's strategic need or assess its compatibility with the planned Barreiro-Chelas rail link. It also flags insufficient assessment of indirect climate impacts and effects on air quality, noise and health from increased tanker traffic.
