ZERO says Aljustrel copper mine study should be rejected

Environmental group ZERO has submitted a public consultation opinion opposing the environmental impact study for ALMINA's planned Gavião underground mine in Aljustrel, a €250 million project to extract 1.5 million tonnes of ore yearly over 17 years. ZERO argues the study fails to assess rail transport as an alternative to trucking concentrates to Setúbal and Huelva, and does not account for tailings disposal beyond 2033, roughly 13 years before mining would end. It also criticises the project for exporting raw concentrates without building domestic processing capacity, unlike countries such as Finland and Sweden.
