Associação Margem Esquerda do Guadiana (AMEG)

AMEG (Associação Margem Esquerda do Guadiana) makes short educational videos about ecology under the name “Aula de Campo Virtual” (Virtual Field Class). Episodes cover questions such as “What is an ecosystem?” and “What is the matter cycle?”, as well as the high biodiversity of the Montado, the traditional agro-silvo-pastoral landscape typical of southern Portugal. The videos go out on social media and on the association's website, to make ecological ideas accessible to a broad audience. AMEG is a nonprofit environmental organisation. Its mission is to promote and value the natural heritage of the Portuguese region on the left bank of the Guadiana river, with a particular focus on that bank's natural and cultural landscape. The work combines environmental education, community outreach and ecosystem conservation. The association believes direct contact with the local community is the right way to involve people in preserving and appreciating local ecosystems. That means students, farmers, senior citizens and other residents. Alongside the videos it runs hands-on educational programmes, mixing in-person community work with virtual learning tools. It wants environmental education to be relevant and practical for people of all ages, from schoolchildren to farmers to senior citizens. The aim is long-term stewardship of the region's ecosystems, built on direct relationships between citizens and the natural environment they live in. On Instagram and Facebook, AMEG is active and shares quarterly activity updates and a quarterly newsletter, so the community knows about upcoming events and educational initiatives.
