Rota Vicentina

Rota Vicentina is a non-profit association created in 2013 to promote nature tourism across the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast region of Portugal. It manages an extensive network of trails, including the iconic Fishermen's Trail and Historical Way, totalling around 750 km for walking and more than 1000 km for cycling along one of the best-preserved coastlines in Southern Europe. Starting with around 100 founding members, the association has grown to over 200 associates, mostly local businesses, municipalities and civic organisations invested in the region's sustainable development. The association works closely with local parish councils (Juntas de Freguesia) to maintain trails and signage, and partners with tourism operators, guesthouses and transport services to support visitors along the routes. Beyond trail maintenance, Rota Vicentina champions "Responsible Tourism", emphasizing that a destination must be good to live in for it to be good to visit — reflecting its dual commitment to protecting the natural and cultural heritage of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park while supporting the livelihoods of local communities. The organisation regularly engages with the public through its blog, newsletter and social media, sharing stories about local traditions such as cork harvesting, regional gastronomy, and biodiversity, including the area's importance for migratory bird observation. It also participates in community events like FACECO, the Cultural and Economic Activities Fair of Odemira, to connect with locals and visitors alike, and to raise support through donations and volunteering. Rota Vicentina continues to evolve through consecutive elected leadership terms, most recently the 2025-2028 Direção, ensuring long-term stewardship of the trail network and its surrounding territory.
