Cânhamor is a Portuguese company based in Garvão, in the municipality of Ourique, which produces ECOblocos® — the only complete carbon-negative wall system certified in the Iberian Peninsula, made from hemp shivs, lime and clay. Founded in 2020, it has seen its ECOblocos® used in more than 1,000 projects in Portugal, Spain, Germany and other countries.
Cânhamor is a pioneering Portuguese company, founded in 2020, specialising in the production of hemp-based building blocks under the ECOblocos® brand, whose development began in 2021. Headquartered at the Recinto da Feira in Garvão, in the municipality of Ourique (Beja), the company has completed its new industrial facility, which is already in operation.
ECOblocos® are the only complete certified carbon-negative wall system available on the Iberian Peninsula. They are made from hemp shiv, lime and clay, and offer exceptional performance in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation and breathability, while sequestering carbon throughout their life cycle. Their unique characteristics make sustainable construction genuinely easy and accessible, countering the notion that building ecologically entails greater cost or complexity.
ECOblocos® have already been used in more than 1,000 projects in Portugal, Spain, Germany and other countries. Cânhamor has played a decisive role in the recovery and revitalisation of industrial hemp cultivation in Portugal.
Cânhamor has been recognised with several innovation awards in the Construction, Materials and Agriculture categories, granted by prestigious bodies such as Tektonica, Consulai and the Expresso/SIC Notícias Real Estate Awards. In 2024, it also received the National Agriculture Award in the New Project Innovation category.
With an investment of around 30 million euros in the new industrial facility and a growing portfolio of certified technical documentation — including carbon footprint assessments, energy efficiency guides and BIM files — Cânhamor is positioning itself as a leader in the decarbonisation of the construction sector in Portugal and beyond.
