Enraizar is a non-profit Learning Community in Santo Isidoro, Mafra, that supports children and families through a nature-based, participatory education model rooted in sustainability and community values.
Enraizar - Associação de Aprendizagem Comunitária is a non-profit organization based in Santo Isidoro, Mafra, Portugal, dedicated to supporting childhood and youth development through an alternative, community-centered educational model. Inspired by the pedagogical philosophy of Prof. José Pacheco, Enraizar defines itself as a 'Learning Community': a social construction of people sharing the same territory, values, and vision of society, who collectively produce knowledge and drive social transformation through local sustainable development projects.
The project operates a Natural Learning Environment where children follow individualized learning paths ('Núcleos de Aprendizagem') that respect their unique interests and pace, while nurturing life projects rather than standardized curricula. Families describe an environment where children learn through direct experience — playing barefoot, exploring nature, and engaging critically with topics like citizenship, sustainability, and civic participation.
Community life is central to Enraizar's identity: seasonal celebrations such as the Dia da Espiga and the Spring Equinox bring together children, parents, and tutors for nature walks, storytelling, and shared meals cooked in a community-built wood-fired oven. Environmental education is woven throughout activities, from Earth Day litter clean-ups and reflections on climate change to lessons on biodiversity and ecological balance observed during coastal walks.
Governed as an association, Enraizar has engaged in capacity-building initiatives, including partnerships with organizations supporting NGO development. Its pillars — Learning, Community, and Sustainability — guide a holistic approach that values individual potential while building a fairer, more sustainable collective future.

Enraizar aims to foster community-based, sustainable learning by nurturing children's individual life paths within a natural learning environment, integrating ecology, education, culture, health and society.

The community welcomes new families, volunteers, and supporters to help sustain their learning projects, communal facilities like the wood-fired oven, and local sustainable development initiatives.
