EVOA – Espaço de Visitação e Observação de Aves

EVOA (Espaço de Visitação e Observação de Aves) sits on the Lezíria Grande, on the edge of the Tagus estuary, one of the largest wetlands in Portugal and a key stopover for migratory birds. Access is through the Portão do Cardal, near the Ponte Marechal Carmona in Vila Franca de Xira, about 30 minutes from Lisbon. The centre is part of Companhia das Lezírias, S.A., and is licensed by Turismo de Portugal (RNAAT nº 79/2013) under Nature Tourism. It offers guided visits for families, dedicated birdwatchers, school groups and companies, with hides positioned around the reserve for close, low-disturbance observation of species such as flamingos, spoonbills, avocets and kingfishers. Electric vehicles and walking routes both take visitors around the site. EVOA works daily on protecting and promoting the biodiversity of the estuary, in partnership with the Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas (ICNF), the Câmara Municipal de Vila Franca de Xira, the Liga para a Proteção da Natureza (LPN), the Associação de Beneficiários da Lezíria Grande de Vila Franca de Xira and Aquaves, among other entities. Volunteers take part in scientific bird ringing activities, and interns support the team's day-to-day conservation and education work. Beyond birdwatching, EVOA runs school programmes on land management, habitat restoration and ecosystem conservation, teacher training sessions, and activities for Universidades Sénior. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, with seasonal hours (9am to 5.30pm from March to October, 10am to 5pm from November to February), and has an average Google rating of 4.6 out of 5 from 549 reviews, with visitors regularly praising the guides and the quality of the natural setting.
