Movimento ALP — Ajude a Limpar a Praia

Movimento ALP (Ajude a Limpar a Praia, or 'Help Clean the Beach') runs open community beach clean-ups and 'Eco Team Building' events for companies. Rodolfo Amado da Silva founded it on 21 April 2011, and it is registered as a national environmental volunteering movement. It wants to raise awareness about protecting Portugal's beaches and coastal ecosystems, and to get both individuals and companies doing hands-on conservation work. It also shares what it has learned about environmental volunteering and sustainability practices. Since it was founded, the movement has collected roughly 19 tonnes of litter from Portuguese beaches, about the load of four heavy goods vehicles. It has helped avoid around 37 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, comparable to driving six times around the Earth. Beyond the clean-ups themselves, the movement places strong emphasis on environmental education. Younger generations in particular are encouraged to build a lasting connection with nature, and to leave the places they visit cleaner than they found them. Partners include the Hope Zones Foundation, Sea Shepherd Portugal and Corona, alongside other brands, NGOs and organisations. ALP has also taken part in high-profile events such as the WSL surfing competitions in Peniche. On social media it posts stories from clean-up actions, environmental reflections and calls to action, making the case that individual gestures add up to significant impact. The movement works from values of environmental and social responsibility, ethics and team spirit, and holds that anyone can make a difference without belonging to a formal organisation.
