Mediterranean Gardening Association Portugal (MGAP)
MGAP is a not-for-profit educational association that works to promote Mediterranean gardening, drought-resilient landscaping and the conservation of native plants in Portugal. It runs events, publishes resources and connects gardeners through a worldwide network of Mediterranean gardening societies.
The Mediterranean Gardening Association Portugal (MGAP) runs an Edible Garden project growing fruit and vegetables. It also organises regular garden tours, fairs and educational talks, including sessions on regenerative agriculture and dry gardening, and publishes information leaflets in several languages. Its website has a blog with gardening articles, seasonal guidance on plants and news updates, and subscribed readers get an occasional newsletter.
The gardening MGAP encourages is suited to Portugal's Mediterranean climate. Members and visitors are invited to explore sustainable, drought-resilient practices that use native and climate-appropriate plants, without relying on irrigation, chemicals or fertilisers.
The association was involved in creating the Barrocais Protected Area, which lies mostly within the municipality of Tavira. It works with local *câmaras* (municipal councils), *freguesias* (parish councils), schools and community groups on educational activities.
MGAP is a not-for-profit educational association based in the Algarve and formally constituted in Portugal, under the name Associação de Plantas e Jardins em Climas Mediterrânicos (APEJECM). A group of gardeners founded it in 2014. It's a forum for anyone with a special interest in Mediterranean horticulture, gardens and plants, and its mission is to promote Mediterranean plants and gardens through education, cultivation and conservation, and through recognition of their communal, environmental and economic importance. A Board of volunteers governs it: a President, Treasurer, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Horticultural Advisor and other officers. MGAP belongs to a worldwide network of affiliated societies, including the Mediterranean Garden Society and sister organisations in France, Chile, Australia and elsewhere.
Our Goal
MGAP promotes Mediterranean plants and gardens across Portugal through education, cultivation and conservation, recognising their communal, environmental and economic importance.
Our Wishes
The association welcomes new members, volunteers and supporters. It is looking for people to take on roles such as Social Media Coordinator and other vacant board positions.
