Mediterranean Gardening Association Portugal (MGAP)
MGAP is a not-for-profit educational association dedicated to promoting Mediterranean gardening, drought-resilient landscaping and native plant conservation in Portugal. It runs events, publishes resources, and connects gardeners through a worldwide network of Mediterranean gardening societies.
The Mediterranean Gardening Association Portugal (MGAP), formally the Associação de Plantas e Jardins em Climas Mediterrânicos (APEJECM), is a not-for-profit educational association based in the Algarve. Its mission is to promote Mediterranean plants and gardens through education, cultivation, conservation and recognition of their communal, environmental and economic importance. Formally constituted in Portugal, MGAP acts as a forum for anyone with a special interest in Mediterranean horticulture, gardens and plants, and is part of a worldwide network of affiliated societies, including the Mediterranean Garden Society and sister organisations in France, Chile, Australia and beyond.
MGAP runs an Edible Garden project growing fruit and vegetables, publishes information leaflets in multiple languages, and organises regular events such as garden tours, fairs and educational talks — including sessions on regenerative agriculture and dry gardening. The association was involved in the creation of the Barrocais Protected Area, primarily located in Tavira Câmara, and partners with local Câmaras, Freguesias, schools and community groups on educational activities. Its website features a blog with gardening articles, seasonal plant guidance, and news updates, alongside an occasional newsletter for subscribed readers.
Governed by a Board of volunteers including a President, Treasurer, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Horticultural Advisor and other officers, MGAP was founded in 2014 by a group of dedicated gardeners. The association encourages members and visitors to explore sustainable, drought-resilient gardening practices suited to Portugal's Mediterranean climate, using native and climate-appropriate plants without reliance on irrigation, chemicals or fertilisers.
