OTSA – Observatório do Turismo Sustentável dos Açores

OTSA – the Sustainable Tourism Observatory of the Azores – is a private, non-profit association based in Ponta Delgada, founded in 2006 by the Regional Government of the Azores, the Azores Tourism Association and the University of the Azores. Its mission is to promote the independent analysis, dissemination and monitoring of tourism activity, helping to guide the sustainable development of tourism across the nine islands of the archipelago. The observatory's work rests on five pillars: observing to monitor, study, inform, train and advise. It carries out opinion surveys among tourists, residents and tourism businesses to gather primary data on how tourism is evolving in the region. It also collects and publishes official tourism statistics, combining institutional sources with its own research and surveys to produce a clear, evidence-based picture of the sector. As a member of the World Tourism Organization's International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) and of Destination Watch, OTSA is responsible for tracking eleven global sustainability indicators in the Azores, allowing the region to assess and adjust its environmental, social and economic performance over time. It also collaborates with Açores DMO, supplying data used in the destination's EarthCheck certification process. Rather than operating tourism services directly, OTSA acts as a scientific and technical reference point for tourism governance, ensuring that strategic decisions rest on solid evidence rather than assumption. It regularly brings together regional tourism directors, government representatives and other stakeholders to discuss the environmental, social and economic dimensions of tourism growth, and runs public consultations inviting residents to share their perceptions of how tourism affects their communities, natural resources and quality of life. Through this combination of research, dialogue and public engagement, OTSA supports the Azores' ambition to be recognised as a destination defined by environmental stewardship as much as by its volcanic landscapes and marine biodiversity.
