NGOs urge joint Portugal-Spain plan to protect Iberian wolf

More than 50 organisations, led by Rewilding Portugal, Green Impact and the Fondo Para la Protección del Lobo Ibérico, are calling on Portugal and Spain to create a joint binational structure to protect the Iberian wolf, modelled on the scheme credited with saving the Iberian lynx. They argue the wolf forms a single shared population but is protected in Portugal while still huntable under weaker rules in Spain, undermining conservation efforts. The proposal, needing only a bilateral agreement rather than new laws, would be coordinated by ICNF and Spain's Ecological Transition Ministry, with a joint strategy and shared census. NGOs also want EU funding and full implementation of Portugal's Alcateia 2025-2035 programme.
