Portugal presents second phase of wild boar study on maize damage

The InovMilho Field Day, taking place on 2 September in Coruche, will present the second phase of a national study on wild boar and its impact on maize crops, led by researcher Carlos Fonseca of the University of Aveiro. The first phase estimated Portugal's wild boar population at around 300,000 animals in 2022, prompting legislative changes to increase hunting pressure. The new phase will assess how effective those mitigation measures have been and extend the analysis to deer and roe deer, which are also causing growing agricultural and road-safety problems. The event also covers precision agriculture and a new higher-education partnership for the farming sector.
