ZERO calls for offshore wind priority at Sines' new pier

Environmental association ZERO said the new General Cargo Pier planned for the Port of Sines, promoted by the APS port authority, should prioritise the energy transition and offshore wind. The project's Environmental Impact Study, in public consultation until 9 September, leaves the pier's final use undefined between renewables, agrifood bulk cargo, RO-RO car operations and dual civil-military use. ZERO argues this indefinition matters given the infrastructure's decades-long lifespan, and calls for the pier to build domestic industrial capacity around offshore wind rather than merely handling equipment made elsewhere. It also flagged insufficient electrification and storage planning, and gaps in assessing cumulative impacts alongside the nearby Molhe Leste extension.
