ZERO opposes new Aljustrel copper mine, demands rejection

Environmental group ZERO has called for the rejection of Almina's planned underground copper and zinc mine at Gavião, in Aljustrel, after the public consultation on its Environmental Impact Study closed. The €250 million project would extract 1.5 million tonnes of ore yearly, exporting about 85,000 tonnes of concentrates annually by truck to Setúbal and Huelva. ZERO criticised the study for ignoring rail transport options, presenting flawed climate calculations, failing to detail waste disposal for millions of tonnes of mining residue, and offering no industrial strategy to add value in Portugal, calling it a 'mining colony' model.
