Broto de bambu

Broto de Bambu grows bamboo plants at Bambuparque, on Herdade da Fonte in São Teotónio, Alentejo, and has been producing them since 1990. It has grown into Europe's largest bamboo producer. Over 100 species are cultivated commercially, and the collection holds 260 species and varieties. Production is split between temperate-climate bamboos (60%) and tropical varieties (40%), for local and international markets. Julio Cesar Nascimento founded the project as Broto de Bambu in 1998. It has built decades of experience in internationally recognised bamboo projects and workshops. Alongside propagating plants, the nursery is pioneering natural bamboo-derived products in Portugal. It makes them 100% natural, using techniques practised for generations in Asian countries, and the products have documented wellbeing benefits. Workshops run regularly on bamboo planting techniques, agricultural uses and construction methods, for anyone who wants to bring bamboo into sustainable land use. There are also retreats with meditation and guided walks through the bamboo groves, built around the plant's health and wellbeing benefits. Bamboo grows fast, uses little water and keeps its leaves all year. It stores carbon, helps control erosion and suits low-carbon construction, which makes it a central resource for sustainable development.
