CCBio – Centro de Competências da Agricultura Biológica

CCBio, formally the Centro de Competências da Agricultura Biológica e dos Produtos no Modo de Produção Biológica, was created to address gaps in Portugal's organic farming sector: weak coordination between institutions, limited diffusion of technical research, and poor links between researchers and producers. Its stated aim is to make Portuguese organic agriculture more competitive through science, technology and training. The centre's driving committee includes the Serpa municipal council, the Portuguese Association of Organic Farming (AGROBIO), the National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinary Research, the local firm Risca Grande, and the Rota do Guadiana association. Beyond this core group, CCBio lists a wide network of partners: municipal councils across the Alentejo (Barrancos, Beja, Castelo Branco, Évora, Idanha-a-Nova, Mértola, Moura), several polytechnic institutes and universities, agri-food technology centres, and organic producer cooperatives such as ALMABIO. Its work spans research into pest, disease and weed management, energy efficiency in production, and new processing techniques for organic food products. CCBio also organises congresses, seminars and training for producers, and carries out market studies to help organic products reach new domestic and international markets. In 2017, a related national initiative, the Smart Farm project developed with ANIPLA, received an honourable mention at the Green Project Awards, alongside other Portuguese sustainability projects.
