Quinta do Mitra

Quinta do Mitra is a certified organic farm located in the parish of Arco de São Jorge, in the north of the island of Madeira. Since April 2006, the farm has produced fresh vegetables, aromatic and medicinal plants, and subtropical fruits under certified organic farming practices (Certification No. 15208 A/08, Certiplanet Control System - PT/AB 04). The adoption of organic production methods has brought renewed vitality to the land, fostering a balanced ecosystem in which crop rotation is used to maintain healthy soil structure and manage pests and diseases naturally, relying on beneficial organisms rather than chemical inputs. All organic waste generated on the farm is composted, and remaining waste is recycled responsibly, reflecting a broader commitment to environmental care. The farm's philosophy centres on preserving the surrounding ecosystem while improving environmental outcomes through recycling, water conservation, and the use of alternative energy sources. Since September 2008, Quinta do Mitra has also been certified for the distribution and home delivery of organic produce baskets, making its harvests accessible directly to consumers. The farm maintains a regular presence at a weekly market held every Wednesday from 9:00 to 16:00 at Praça da Restauração in Funchal, alongside its free home delivery service. Quinta do Mitra promotes the idea that consuming organically grown food is a direct investment in personal health, encapsulated in its motto encouraging people to choose organic products for their wellbeing. The project stands as a long-running example of certified organic agriculture on Madeira, combining ecological stewardship with practical, community-facing distribution channels.
