Mata Nacional do Bussaco stewards the Buçaco National Forest, a centuries-old woodland in Luso, Portugal, offering guided tours and artisanal products made from the forest's own herbs.
Buçaco National Forest sits in Luso, Portugal, a woodland shaped over centuries and joined by the Bussaco Palace Hotel and its gardens. Mata Nacional do Bussaco looks after this site and opens it to the public through guided visits that cover its natural features, history and biodiversity.
Visitors can book tours that take in the forest's oldest trees and quietest corners, alongside general information on the site's ecology and heritage. The Loja dos Produtos da Mata sells regional goods: Bairrada wines, traditional sweets like Caramujos and Cavacas do Luso, local honey, herbal liqueurs and handcrafted items.
The forest also makes its own products from plants grown on site. Herbal infusions use thyme, lemon verbena, rosemary and mint. Seasoned salt blends combine flor de sal with forest-grown herbs. Bath products are infused with rosemary, lavender and rose petals. Each of these ties directly to what grows within the forest's own nurseries and grounds.
Through guided visits, the shop and its own line of herbal and craft products, the project supports environmental awareness and responsible tourism, encouraging people to spend time in the forest and understand what it takes to keep it standing for the next generation.
