Monte da Luz Dourada

Monte da Luz Dourada is a French-American family homestead and nature reserve in Alentejo, Portugal, combining permaculture, natural health and wildlife conservation on several hectares of cork oak and olive land.
Monte da Luz Dourada is a traditional Alentejo homestead ('monte alentejano') run by a French-American family who relocated to southern Portugal to live more simply and sustainably. Spread across several hectares dotted with cork oak and olive trees, the property functions both as a family home and as a small nature reserve, where permaculture principles guide the regeneration of the land and the promotion of biodiversity. The family has transformed an empty backyard slope into an orchard using permaculture swales, built entirely by hand without machinery, and produces their own olive oil from the land's olive trees.
Beyond food production, the project is rooted in natural health: one family member is a US-trained naturopathic doctor, doula, yoga teacher and craniosacral therapist who blends herbal medicine and holistic wellness practices with daily life on the land. The other leads wildlife photography, ethical birding tours and web/photography teaching, and is deeply involved in the practical work of permaculture design and land stewardship. Wildlife observation is a strong focus, with the land serving as a haven for birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals, and guided land tours and birdwatching experiences are offered to visitors wanting to learn about the site's approach to regeneration.
The long-term vision is to welcome guests for family-friendly wellness and nature retreats, sharing the couple's evolving knowledge of self-sufficiency, natural health and land regeneration. The family documents their journey publicly through a blog, YouTube videos and social media, inviting others to follow their transition from conventional life to a nature-centred, community-oriented existence in rural Alentejo.
Our Goal
To regenerate a traditional Alentejo homestead through permaculture, protect its wildlife, and eventually welcome guests for family-friendly wellness and nature retreats.
Our Wishes
The family welcomes visitors interested in permaculture, birdwatching and land regeneration, and invites people to follow and support their journey online.
