Mud Valley Institute

Mud Valley Institute is a nonprofit near Lagos, in the southwestern Algarve, that works against desertification through eco-social regenerative education and action. It operates under the umbrella of the Mud Valley Foundation. Desertification is a growing problem across Mediterranean Europe. Climate change, overgrazing, deforestation, intensive agriculture and urban sprawl all drive it. The institute's work rests on three linked pillars: - tangible improvements to soil quality, water availability and biodiversity - research, education and training in ecosystem regeneration - a hub where land stewards and bioregions share knowledge By combining science, community action and practical land management, it wants to secure good-quality food and water for local communities while restoring the ecological balance. Its programmes include regular community events such as “Ecosystem Regeneration Mondays” at Vale da Lama, volunteer opportunities, and workshops on topics like community resilience to wildfires. The institute belongs to a global network of ecosystem restoration communities and has been recognised as an ECHO Ambassador. The vision behind the work is a regenerated Earth where ecological, social and economic systems work together, so that everyone has secure access to quality food and water and the planet can fully support all life. This vision is rooted in bioregional unity, and the institute's values are ecological integrity, social equity and economic sustainability. The institute invites individuals, land stewards and communities to take an active part in regenerating the landscape of southwestern Portugal.
