Oceano Azul Foundation

Oceano Azul Foundation is an international foundation based in Lisbon dedicated to ocean conservation through science, policy advocacy, and collaboration with global decision-makers.
Oceano Azul Foundation is an international foundation launched in 2016 with headquarters at the Lisbon Oceanarium, aiming to create a new level of connection, action, and impact for ocean sustainability. The foundation works from the ocean's point of view, bringing together science and decision-makers to accelerate systemic, meaningful change for marine ecosystems. Its work spans advancing conservation science, driving ocean policy change internationally, and transforming how governments and institutions make decisions about the marine environment. The foundation has contributed to the establishment of over 300,000 km² of protected marine areas in partnership with governments and organisations, led three scientific expeditions and contributed to three others, and supported capacity-building initiatives in more than 60 countries to help leaders shape ocean policy and unlock the potential of the blue economy. Key focus areas include marine protected areas, deep-sea conservation, blue carbon and climate mitigation, international ocean governance, and community engagement around ocean issues. The foundation communicates extensively about the ecological, economic, and social value of the ocean — from biodiversity and oxygen production to climate regulation and livelihoods — and advocates for stronger, science-based protection frameworks, including support for a moratorium on deep-sea mining. Backed by major founding partners and a broad team of conservation scientists, policy specialists, and communications professionals, Oceano Azul Foundation positions itself as a bridge between scientific knowledge, diplomacy, and pragmatic policy action, working to secure a healthier, more resilient and sustainable ocean for future generations.
Our Goal
