Located a few hundred metres from the Atlantic Ocean, near the historic town of Tavira in southern Portugal, Orchard of Flavours (Pomar dos Sabores) is an innovative edible botanical garden and BGCI-accredited institution focused on fruit trees and edible plants of warm climates. The garden brings together species already cultivated in the Algarve alongside forgotten or rare species from subtropical regions — all suited to USDA hardiness zones 9–12 — taking advantage of the Algarve's exceptional year-round sunshine.
The project pursues three core missions: enriching the local landscape by cultivating exotic fruit trees and perennial edible plants; contributing to climate change adaptation through research on water-saving techniques and drought-resistant species; and freely sharing all findings and educational resources with a global community of conscious growers.
Visitors can explore the garden through self-guided or private guided tours, embarking on what the team calls a 'Food Tree Safari.' Educational resources include a free online Food Forest course, food tree workshops, professional consultancy services, a comprehensive fruit trees database organised by origin, and a dedicated Food Forest Lab and research section. The project also maintains connections with subtropical plant nurseries, serving as a living reference for sustainable agriculture, permaculture, and food forest design.
As a non-profit open-source educational project, Orchard of Flavours makes all its knowledge freely available, nurturing a growing network of researchers, educators, and growers interested in climate-resilient food production in Portugal and beyond.
Our Goal
To cultivate, research, and freely share knowledge about edible fruit trees and warm-climate plants, supporting climate adaptation and biodiversity in southern Portugal.
Our Wishes
The project welcomes visitors, volunteers, and collaborators who share a passion for food forests, sustainable agriculture, and open-source education.
