Plantar uma Árvore is a Portuguese environmental NGO dedicated to native forest conservation and ecological restoration through volunteer-driven tree planting and habitat recovery programmes. The organisation has engaged over 37,000 volunteers across key natural areas including Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and Mata Nacional do Bussaco.
Plantar uma Árvore is a Portuguese environmental association based at Quinta de Miraventos in Palmela, dedicated to the restoration and conservation of native forests throughout Portugal. Since its founding, the organisation has engaged over 37,000 volunteers, accumulated more than 138,000 hours of volunteer work, and delivered over 1,172 conservation initiatives, establishing itself as one of Portugal's leading forces in grassroots ecological restoration.
The association's work centres on hands-on field restoration in some of Portugal's most ecologically significant areas, including the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, the Mata Nacional do Bussaco, and the Reserva Natural Local do Barreiro. Activities are structured around two annual seasons: a maintenance season running from April to September, and a tree planting season in the cooler months, ensuring year-round care and continuous forest recovery.
Beyond direct restoration, Plantar uma Árvore offers a rich programme of educational and community engagement activities. These include interpretive guided visits focused on Mediterranean flora ecology, native plant restoration techniques, and the medicinal and gastronomic uses of indigenous species, as well as night-time butterfly observation sessions that connect participants to forest biodiversity in an immersive way.
The organisation takes a deliberately inclusive approach, actively involving families, schools, and corporate teams in its conservation mission. Plantar uma Árvore also hosts European Solidarity Corps volunteers, providing international participants with immersive conservation experiences and fostering cross-border collaboration in environmental work.
Native forest, at the heart of the organisation's mission, provides essential ecosystem services including soil erosion control, hydrological regulation, nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, air purification, and fire and flood risk reduction — all critical benefits for Portugal's landscapes and communities.
Our Goal
To restore and conserve Portugal's native forests through volunteer-driven field programmes, engaging communities and fostering ecological recovery across the country's most significant natural areas.
Our Wishes
Plantar uma Árvore welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds — families, schools, corporate teams, and international participants — to join its conservation efforts and help plant the future of Portugal's native forests.
