Salema Eco Camp, located near Praia da Salema in the Algarve, is the first hotel unit in southern Portugal committed to a regenerative tourism model and a candidate for the Zero Waste business certificate. The camp calculates its annual carbon footprint and continuously invests in decarbonisation projects to reduce its environmental impact.
Guests can choose from a wide range of accommodation options: Tipi tents, Woody tents, Domes, and the Willow Tree Dome for glamping enthusiasts; rustic Eco Lodges with valley views; comfortable Mobile Homes; traditional camping pitches for tents, caravans, and motorhomes; and apartments and studios for those who prefer conventional comfort in a natural setting. Long-stay guests and remote workers are also welcome, with facilities and connectivity available for an immersive nature experience.
Sustainability is embedded in every aspect of operations. An on-site wastewater treatment station recycles all water used in the facilities — a critical measure in water-scarce Algarve. A composting system is available to guests, turning organic waste into material used within the grounds and, in the near future, to be shared with local entities. The cleaning team exclusively uses natural or eco-certified products, and sewage treatment relies on natural inputs and bacteria that support rather than disrupt the local ecosystem.
The on-site restaurant Nazari displays the carbon footprint of each dish and sources ingredients locally within a 150 km radius. An Eco Store complements the offering with sustainable products. Regenerative activities include a Magic Garden, weekly butterfly tours, night moth observation sessions, traditional Algarve basketry (empreita) workshops, air-dry clay workshops, guided hikes, and conservation events — all aimed at celebrating natural and social diversity while actively contributing to ecosystem recovery.
Our Goal
Salema Eco Camp aims to pioneer regenerative tourism in southern Portugal, minimising environmental impact through zero-waste practices, carbon footprint reduction, and active ecosystem restoration.
Our Wishes
The camp welcomes guests, long-stay visitors, and remote workers who share a commitment to sustainable living, and seeks partnerships with local entities to share composting output and expand regenerative practices in the region.
