Sciaena

Sciaena is a Portuguese Non-Governmental Organisation, founded in 2006, working at national and international level to promote a healthy marine environment and an informed population actively engaged in its conservation. Based at the University of Algarve campus in Faro, Sciaena focuses its efforts on encouraging sustainable exploitation of marine resources, particularly in fisheries and aquaculture, minimising the impacts of pollution, and fostering public participation and policy intervention. The organisation believes that raising awareness is essential to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and society, valuing the opinions and actions of all stakeholders to shape integrated strategies and policies. Sciaena acts as an open channel for communication, information, training, education and knowledge-sharing around ocean-related issues. Among its activities, Sciaena runs educational initiatives such as "Putos da Praia", engaging children and young people with the Ria Formosa ecosystem and marine biodiversity through hands-on experiences with partner organisations, including wildlife recovery centres and marine science institutions. The organisation is also involved in international research projects addressing fish welfare in wild capture fisheries and aquaculture, such as Well4Catch and AQUAREACH, and runs public awareness campaigns like Plastic Free July to reduce plastic pollution. Sciaena also engages in policy advocacy, publishing manifestos and proposals calling for stronger governance of ocean conservation in Portugal, including recommendations to national government on climate and fisheries policy. Through its combination of scientific research, education, communication and advocacy, Sciaena continues to work towards healthier seas and more sustainable relationships between people and the ocean.
