Tapada Nacional de Mafra

Tapada Nacional de Mafra is a unique enclosed forest in Mafra, Portugal, combining centuries of history with a strong commitment to biodiversity preservation. Originally created as a royal hunting ground, the Tapada today functions as a protected natural area where deer, fallow deer and countless other species roam freely among diverse forest landscapes. Its mission centers on scientific research and conservation, aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. As part of the Real Edifício de Mafra — which also includes the Royal Palace, Basilica, Convent and Cerco Garden — the Tapada was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2019, recognizing its cultural, historical and environmental value. The project actively communicates its conservation achievements, such as confirming the endemic status of the Luciola lusitanica firefly species, and has been recognized publicly for its rewilding and biodiversity work.
