Toca do Coelho is a small open community farm and creative sanctuary nestled in the hills of the Algarve near Alferce, Southern Portugal, built on principles of permaculture, self-organisation, art, and communal living. Enabled by the Amsterdam-based KONIJN collective, the project is currently focused on rebuilding and restoring land after the 2018 Monchique forest fires.

Toca do Coelho — Portuguese for 'Rabbit Warren' — is a small, open community farm tucked into the mountains of Southern Portugal, near Alferce in the Algarve. Founded and owned by an individual known as Joey and enabled by the Amsterdam-based KONIJN collective, the project blends agroforestry, permaculture design, creative expression, and intentional community living into a living social experiment. The KONIJN collective, originally rooted in creating non-commercial, self-organising festivals and sanctuary spaces in the Netherlands, extended its vision to Portugal with the establishment of Toca do Coelho. In addition to building the farm, the collective organised the Festival Saudade to celebrate the project's opening, bringing together artists, performers, and visitors in the spirit of beauty, sustainability, and communal joy. In 2018, Toca do Coelho was severely affected by the catastrophic Monchique forest fires, which destroyed large parts of the surrounding landscape. Since then, the community has been actively engaged in rebuilding the farm and restoring the land — an ongoing effort that requires continued volunteer support, donated materials, and financial contributions. Day-to-day life on the farm is lovingly maintained by Sofee and Rabbit, who welcome guests and keep the community running. Visitors are warmly invited to come and experience the farm, connect with the land, and contribute to its ongoing regeneration. The project embraces a donation-based model, accepting contributions via PayPal, Bunq, and bank transfer. Toca do Coelho stands as a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of collective action — a place where art, ecology, and community converge in the hills of Southern Portugal.
