Essência is an off-grid, plant-based eco-village and holistic healing centre nestled in the natural landscape of Aljezur, southern Portugal, offering retreats, community living, and nature-based programmes. It is a strictly substance-free sanctuary where guests and residents explore self-discovery, wellness, and sustainable community life.
Essência is an intentional eco-village and holistic healing centre located in Aljezur, on the magnificent coast of southern Portugal. Operating as a partially off-grid regenerative community, Essência combines sustainable living practices with deep personal transformation, offering a unique space where nature, healing, and conscious community converge.
The project encompasses a meditation sanctuary, a food forest, a medicinal garden, and a retreat centre hosting a diverse calendar of immersive programmes. These include yoga and somatics retreats, spagyric and plant medicine immersions, ecstatic dance events, voice workshops, and transformative courses integrating kriya yoga, tantra, pranayama, and mindfulness practices.
At the heart of Essência is a vibrant Healing Center where dedicated practitioners offer guided sessions to support guests on their journey towards balance, clarity, and renewal. The community gathers every Thursday for Community Day — a shared morning of garden work, a nourishing vegan lunch, and an evening SPArkling Night featuring a sauna, hot tub, and fireside singing circle.
Essência also hosts the Kids Temple, a forest-school-inspired space where children aged 2–10 can explore, play, and develop holistically in close connection with nature. Parents are encouraged to participate, observe, or contribute, nurturing a shared sense of community and care.
Accommodation options range from handcrafted yurts and glamping tents to farmhouse rooms and van or camper spots, all set within a serene forest environment. The community is strictly plant-based and substance-free — no alcohol or tobacco — embracing slow, mindful living as a daily practice.
Essência was co-founded after the team's experience creating the nomadic glamping eco-retreat NomadShala and the Healing Heart Festival, and it continues to grow as a space that invites individuals, families, and practitioners to live, heal, and thrive together in conscious community.
