Most food is lost before it reaches a shop, and much of what reaches one is thrown out while still edible. The projects here intercept it at both ends: at the farm, where produce is rejected on size or shape, and at the counter, where the day's surplus would otherwise go in a bin.
REFOOD runs a volunteer network that collects surplus from restaurants and shops and redistributes it locally. Fruta Feia buys “ugly” fruit and vegetables from farmers and sells them on to members in weekly baskets.
Both depend on volunteers and both are joinable in an evening. Related: composting, food sovereignty and zero waste living. Dated activities from these projects are listed in our events calendar.
