This is the least romantic focus on the site and one of the most consequential. Portugal recycles less of its municipal waste than its European targets require, and closing that gap is a matter of collection systems, sorting plants and contracts rather than good intentions.
Sociedade Ponto Verde has run packaging waste nationally since the nineties and Electrão handles electricals and batteries. LIPOR manages waste for Greater Porto. Valérius 360 recycles textile waste in Barcelos, Portugal Reciclagem processes plastics near Oliveira de Azeméis, and The Loop Co. came out of the University of Coimbra to develop circular materials.
Sorting correctly at home is worth more here than any single purchase decision. See also zero waste living, upcycling and repurposing and circular building practices. Dated activities from these projects are listed in our events calendar.
