Sustainable fashion in Portugal

Portugal is one of the few countries in Europe that still has the whole textile chain (spinning, weaving, dyeing, making up) mostly in the north, mostly around Porto and the Ave valley. That industrial base attracts foreign sustainable brands and gives domestic ones room to produce locally.

ISTO. makes everyday clothing in Lisbon with published costs and factory names. SENSIHEMP works with regenerative hemp in Póvoa de Varzim. Burel Factory weaves Serra da Estrela wool in Manteigas, Tinctorium dyes with plants near Lisbon, and Vintage for a Cause and Valérius 360 work from textile waste in Porto and Barcelos.

Transparency is the thing to look for: a brand that names its factory is telling you something. Related focuses: upcycling and repurposing, handmade and local crafts and eco-friendly products. Dated activities from these projects are listed in our events calendar.
