Tinctorium Studio

Tinctorium Studio is a process-based natural dye and eco-print atelier located in São Domingos de Rana, near Lisbon, Portugal. Founded in 2020 by Annette Brinckerhoff, the studio works exclusively with plant-based colors — either responsibly foraged from the surrounding landscape or grown in a dye garden cultivated according to permaculture principles. Each dye plant and the art created with it acts as an ambassador, bridging the gap between people and the ecosystems they often overlook. The studio produces one-of-a-kind wearable art pieces, naturally dyed and eco-printed with seasonal plants on sustainable fabrics. Collections follow the rhythm of the natural calendar, drawing on winter evergreens, spring weeds, summer garden plants, and autumn tree leaves, with particular attention given to native Portuguese oak species, including the iconic cork oak (Quercus suber). Oak leaves are used for fall eco-printing, acorns yield rich brown dyes and inks, and gallnuts provide some of the finest gallotannins in the world. Beyond its product line, Tinctorium Studio runs in-person workshops teaching natural dyeing and eco-printing techniques, and offers DIY kits with pre-mordanted fabric blanks and dyeing materials for home exploration. The showroom, studio, and dye garden can be visited by appointment, and pieces are also sold online and at local markets. Sitting at the intersection of sustainable fashion, botanical knowledge, and ecological education, Tinctorium Studio has become a distinctive voice within Portugal's sustainable living community.
