Burel Factory

Burel Factory weaves burel, a dense handwoven wool cloth historically used by shepherds in the Serra da Estrela, and sells it in more than 80 colours. Wool weaving has shaped culture and identity in these mountains for centuries. The brand was founded to recover and amplify ancestral textile processes, and it works to preserve the legacy and knowledge of Portuguese textile production by protecting, regenerating and innovating traditional methods. The range covers blankets and cushions for the home, sweaters and bags, and fabric sold by the metre. All of it is made in-house. Bespoke orders run on a 20-day cycle. The factory is in Manteigas, where 19th-century machines still card, spin and weave the wool. Visits are possible by prior reservation, at €5 per person. The company also runs two boutique hotels, Casa de São Lourenço and Casa das Penhas Douradas, which connect visitors to the landscape, culture and craftsmanship of the Serra da Estrela. Traditional craft, modern design and local production together feed the economy of the region. Burel Factory supports local artisans and keeps wool-working knowledge passing from one generation to the next.
