Burel Factory is a Portuguese brand born in Serra da Estrela dedicated to preserving and innovating the traditional burel wool textile industry, creating handcrafted products for fashion, home décor, and design. Rooted in generations of wool-craft knowledge, it elevates burel into art and living cultural heritage.

Burel Factory is a Portuguese brand deeply rooted in the Serra da Estrela mountain region, where the tradition of wool weaving has shaped local culture and identity for centuries. Founded with a mission to recover and amplify ancestral textile processes, the brand works to preserve the legacy and knowledge of Portuguese textile production, perpetuating heritage through careful preservation, regeneration, and innovation of traditional methods. The centrepiece of their work is burel — a dense, handwoven wool fabric historically used by shepherds in the Serra da Estrela — which Burel Factory has elevated into a contemporary design material available in over 80 colours. Their product range spans home décor items such as blankets and cushions, fashion pieces including sweaters and bags, and fabric sold by the metre, all produced in-house within a 20-day cycle for bespoke orders. Operating from its historic factory in Manteigas, the brand maintains 19th-century machines that still weave, card, and spin wool, preserving the rhythm and mastery of a production process defined by detail and incomparable quality. The company ensures the legacy of wool and burel through design, art, and textile innovation, weaving threads of the past into a sustainable, circular, and more authentic vision of the future. Beyond production, Burel Factory operates two boutique hotels — Casa de São Lourenço and Casa das Penhas Douradas — anchoring the brand as a full destination experience that connects visitors to the landscape, culture, and craftsmanship of the Serra da Estrela. Factory visits are available by prior reservation at a fee of €5 per person. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design sensibility and sustainable local production, Burel Factory contributes to the economic dynamism of its region, supporting local artisans and keeping generational knowledge alive. The brand represents a model of cultural sustainability — where heritage, community, and innovation intersect to create products of lasting value.
