An upcycling atelier in Torres Vedras, founded by Margarida Vieira, that makes handmade jewellery and slow fashion and restores furniture, all from reclaimed materials. The atelier promotes circular design and sustainable craftsmanship.
Margarida Vieira's atelier in Torres Vedras takes discarded and forgotten materials and turns them into jewellery, slow fashion pieces and restored furniture. Each piece is one of a kind and handmade in Portugal.
Atelier Janela Velha started as a workshop for restoring, transforming and painting furniture. That work still goes on, restoring pre-loved pieces that would otherwise be thrown away. Over time the atelier added handmade jewellery and slow fashion alongside it, and it now works as a design studio built around the circular economy.
The jewellery line is called “UP Jewels” and turns reclaimed materials into accessories. The slow fashion pieces are part of the atelier's commitment to reducing textile waste and offering an alternative to fast fashion. Across all three lines, the atelier's work reflects a respect for traditional craft techniques with a contemporary approach to design and to how things are consumed.
The atelier takes part in local markets and fairs around Portugal, including in Torres Vedras and the surrounding region, connecting directly with people who look for sustainable, locally made products. It has a loyal following and a growing presence on social media.
Our Goal
Atelier Janela Velha wants to give discarded materials a new life through upcycling, making unique handmade jewellery, slow fashion pieces and restored furniture, and it is committed to sustainable and ethical production.
Our Wishes
The project welcomes support from people interested in sustainable fashion, upcycled design and handmade crafts. It is also open to collaborations with local markets and creative events.
