Alimentação Saudável e Sustentável is an educational initiative by ABAAE, run within Portugal's Eco-Schools Programme, providing schools with tools, challenges, and information to foster healthy and sustainable food habits.

Alimentação Saudável e Sustentável is a project coordinated by the Associação Bandeira Azul de Ambiente e Educação (ABAAE), the organisation responsible for running the Eco-Schools Programme in Portugal. The initiative works directly with schools across the country, providing educational content, practical activities, and structured challenges to help students and staff adopt healthier and more sustainable food habits. The project offers several ongoing activities, including the Eco-Ementas (Eco-Menus) registration, which invites schools to develop healthy, sustainable and tasty menus, and the Eco-Cozinheiro (Eco-Cook) challenge, which recognises schools and students for outstanding contributions to sustainable food practices. Each school year, new challenges are launched to keep engagement fresh and relevant, along with informational resources such as tips, recommendations and useful links to support teachers and students in exploring food sustainability topics. Through its website, the project shares updates on award winners, upcoming challenges, and general information and inspiration related to sustainable eating. By embedding food sustainability into the wider Eco-Schools framework, the initiative helps schools integrate environmental education into daily school life, encouraging long-term behavioural change around food choices, waste reduction and awareness of sustainable diets. This project plays an important role in Portugal's broader environmental education landscape, connecting food, health and sustainability topics with the school community, and empowering the next generation to make more conscious and responsible food decisions.

Our Goal

Promote healthy and sustainable eating habits in Portuguese schools by supporting educators and students with resources, challenges, and guidance within the Eco-Schools Programme.

Our Wishes

The project encourages schools to register and participate in the yearly Eco-Ementas and Eco-Cozinheiro challenges to strengthen sustainable food practices in school communities.
