Arcadia Portugal builds with earth, lime and stone in São Bartolomeu de Messines, Algarve. It combines ancestral Mediterranean building traditions with contemporary ecological design, and it is developing a new kind of retreat: slower, quieter and closely connected to the land. Earthen building is at the centre of the project, using these natural materials to make curved structures, domes and patios. Arcadia is exploring and applying earthbag building, earthship design and limewash finishes to create living spaces that are affordable and ecologically sound. Passive design guides the architecture, with forms that respond to the climate, the light and the well-being of the people inside, and that respect the surrounding habitat. The approach to form and technique is experimental, and the site works as a living laboratory for ecological construction, regenerative land practices and community connection. On the land, soil regeneration and syntropic agroforestry make food production and ecological restoration part of daily life. Arcadia also rethinks hospitality and community. More than a lodge, it's a space to host, gather and reconnect, drawing on the Algarve's rural rhythms and communal heritage. The project encourages creativity and collaboration within local communities and invites people to take part in its vision of a more sustainable, grounded way of living.
