Living the Life Portugal is a family project based on a small quinta in a village near Figueiró dos Vinhos, in central Portugal. Tom, Ros, and their sons Lawrie and Wilfred left behind the conventional 9-to-5 lifestyle in 2018, sold or gave away around 90% of their possessions, and set off in a converted Iveco Daily camper van across 13 European countries and 20,000 miles before settling in Portugal in 2019. Feeling immediately at home, they purchased their current quinta in a small village with only ten permanent residents and began welcoming guests on a conscious donation basis.
What began as a stopping point for vanlifers quickly evolved into a thriving hosting community, with over 200 guests received — from backpackers to families. The family also actively supports people looking to relocate to Portugal, offering guidance and advice on finding places to live and integrating into local communities.
The family follows a straight-edge, wholefood lifestyle — free from drugs and alcohol — and is actively developing a yoga and breathwork practice, working every day to become stronger and healthier while maintaining a positive outlook. Their mission is to share their space, knowledge, and lived experience — including the joys and challenges of off-grid rural life — with all who visit.
The project is community-oriented and particularly joyful in welcoming families with children. Long-term, the family dreams of hosting a festival on the quinta and helping to create a wider community network. Living the Life Portugal represents an inspiring example of intentional, nature-connected living and a testament to what is possible when a family chooses to step off the conventional path.
Our Goal
To create an open, community-oriented space on a rural quinta in central Portugal where a family shares their home, skills, and lived experience with guests on a conscious donation basis, inspiring others to pursue a nature-connected, intentional lifestyle.
Our Wishes
The project welcomes visitors, families with children, and people curious about relocating to Portugal, and is open to collaboration and community connection.
