Nowhere Desk

Nowhere Desk is a coworking and co-living farm in a centuries-old stone farmhouse among green hills in Arcos de Valdevez, northern Portugal. It was founded in 2021 and has ten rooms, a wood-fired kitchen, terraced gardens and high-speed Wi-Fi, for people who want to work remotely while reconnecting with the land. Guests and long-term residents join in the daily work of the farm: planting, harvesting and composting. There are regular community events as well, including seed-saving workshops, a silent book club, local producer markets, digital detox retreats and sustainability swap meets. The seed-saving and cultivation workshops are run in partnership with experts and teach how to propagate and store heritage varieties. It's licensed accommodation, with double and shared rooms for weekly and monthly stays. In the volunteer and work-exchange programme, participants give a few hours a day to farm maintenance, cooking or community projects in exchange for a reduced-cost stay. Nowhere Desk is positioned as neither a hotel nor a hostel. It aims to be a place to belong for digital nomads, entrepreneurs and anyone drawn to a slower, more grounded way of life in the Portuguese countryside. The founder, Maria do Céu Bastos, completed her PhD at 58. She then sold her house to build a place where sustainability is lived rather than theorised. By planting trees, saving heritage seeds, hosting markets and starting a book club, she has been gradually turning the farmhouse into a learning centre for skills such as growing food, building community and living close to the land.
