Nowhere Desk

Nowhere Desk is a rural coworking and co-living project set in a centuries-old stone farmhouse surrounded by green hills in Arcos de Valdevez, northern Portugal. Founded in 2021, it offers ten rooms, a wood-fired kitchen, terraced gardens, and high-speed Wi-Fi for people who want to work remotely while reconnecting with the land. Guests and long-term residents take part in the daily rhythm of the farm — planting, harvesting, composting — and in regular community events such as seed-saving workshops, a silent book club, local producer markets, digital detox retreats, and sustainability swap meets. The project is licensed accommodation, offering double and shared rooms, weekly and monthly stays, and a volunteer/work-exchange programme in which participants contribute a few hours a day to farm maintenance, cooking, or community projects in exchange for reduced-cost stays. Nowhere Desk was founded by Maria do Céu Bastos, who completed her PhD at 58 and then sold her house to build a place where sustainability is lived rather than theorised. She has planted trees, saved heritage seeds, hosted markets, and started a book club, gradually turning the farmhouse into a learning center for skills such as growing food, building community, and living close to the land. Seed-saving and cultivation workshops are run in partnership with Atimati Aroso, teaching heritage-variety propagation and storage. Positioned as neither hotel nor hostel, Nowhere Desk aims to be a place to belong — for digital nomads, entrepreneurs, and anyone drawn to a slower, more grounded way of life in the Portuguese countryside.
