Quinta Shangri-La

Quinta Shangri-La is a biodynamic farm and intentional community with a small bed and breakfast in the hills near Silves, Algarve. The property has no Wi-Fi or mobile coverage and hosts guests, WWOOF-style volunteers and long-term residents.
Quinta Shangri-La sits in the hills five kilometres from Silves, in the Algarve, at Sitio do Falacho de Baixo. Stefano Novellino started the project, describing it as an ECO/BIO biodynamic and permaculture farm as far south in Europe as feasible, aiming for a warm climate suited to a rich variety of subtropical fruit and plants. The farm draws on ecoregenerative and syntropic agriculture ideas and on impulses from Rudolf Steiner, and the project has received guests since June 2016.
The site is kept free of microwave-generating devices of any kind. There is no wireless coverage beyond satellite, and mobile phones do not work on the grounds. Smoking, drugs, alcohol and pets are not allowed. The project frames this as a deliberate choice, an environment meant for healing body, soul and mind away from constant connectivity.
Visitors can stay as paying guests in a B&B, hostel or camping setup, with the option to join farm activities and share meals when available. Volunteers can join for a two-week stay in exchange for board and lodging, working mainly in biodynamic farming and horticulture with a focus on fruit tree cultivation. Longer-term residents are also considered case by case, including for those looking to settle for extended periods.
Faro is the nearest airport, and Silves the nearest town, 5 km away; the train station is 12 km off. Pick-up can be arranged from Silves station for €15 or from Faro airport for €150. Visitors are asked to avoid perfumes, scented shampoos or other strong fragrances out of respect for those living on site.
Our Goal
Quinta Shangri-La aims to run a biodynamic, syntropic farm in the hills near Silves, growing subtropical fruit and plants while keeping the land free from microwave radiation and Wi-Fi.
Our Wishes
The project welcomes volunteers for biodynamic farming and fruit tree cultivation, and looks for guests and long-term residents who respect its smoke-, alcohol- and microwave-free rules.
