Sementes is a Centre for Support to Home Education (Centro de Apoio ao Ensino Doméstico) in Torres Novas, Portugal, offering a regenerative, community-built alternative to traditional schooling for children of mixed ages.

Sementes - Núcleo de Capacitação Pessoal e Comunitária is an educational initiative based in Liteiros, Torres Novas, in the district of Santarém, Portugal. Grounded in the paradigms of regeneration and communication, the project was created by and for the local community as a response to the growing number of families seeking alternatives to conventional schooling — home education in Portugal grew 20% in just one year. Sementes organises children into small mixed-age groups of up to five, each accompanied by a dedicated tutor who gets to know every child's rhythm, interests and needs. A multidisciplinary team, including a full-time learning facilitator and two part-time facilitators, provides ongoing psycho-pedagogical support as part of daily routines rather than as an emergency measure. The day is structured around focused learning in the mornings (reading, writing, maths and research aligned with the national curriculum's Essential Learnings), a shared lunch and free time at midday, and afternoons dedicated to workshops, outdoor activities and emergent projects. Learning happens through real problems and genuine curiosity — from children negotiating turns on a swing to building a playground from pallets or running weekly cooking workshops. The centre is organised sociocratically: decisions are made by consent, in circles, involving those affected by them. While preparing children for national exams, Sementes deliberately avoids turning learning into an anxiety-driven race, instead nurturing skills like critical thinking, adaptability, collaboration and resilience — competencies seen as essential for an uncertain future increasingly shaped by automation and artificial intelligence.

Our Goal

Sementes aims to build a regenerative, community-based educational space in Torres Novas that supports children's learning and personal growth through small groups, real-world projects and a sociocratic, family-built organisation.

Our Wishes

The project welcomes families seeking alternatives to conventional schooling and community members interested in supporting a regenerative learning centre through participation, volunteering or resources.
