At Sementes - Núcleo de Capacitação Pessoal e Comunitária, children learn in small mixed-age groups of up to five. Each group has a dedicated tutor who gets to know every child's rhythm, interests and needs. The educational project is based in Liteiros, Torres Novas, in the Santarém district. It was created by and for the local community in response to families looking for alternatives to conventional schooling: home education in Portugal grew 20% in just one year. The project is grounded in ideas of regeneration and communication. The multidisciplinary team includes one full-time learning facilitator and two part-time facilitators. Ongoing psycho-pedagogical support is part of the daily routine, not something brought in as an emergency measure. Mornings are for focused learning: reading, writing, maths and research, aligned with the Essential Learnings of the national curriculum. Midday brings a shared lunch and free time. Afternoons go to workshops, outdoor activities and emergent projects. Children learn through real problems and real curiosity, from negotiating turns on the swing to building a playground out of pallets or running weekly cooking workshops. The centre is run sociocratically. Decisions are made by consent, in circles, with the people they affect. Sementes prepares children for national exams but deliberately avoids turning learning into a race driven by anxiety. It works instead on critical thinking, adaptability, collaboration and resilience, skills it sees as essential for an uncertain future increasingly shaped by automation and artificial intelligence.
