Sterna - Aveiro Ria Tours & Birdwatching

Sterna is a nature tourism company operating solar-powered, silent boat tours and birdwatching experiences across the Ria de Aveiro. It combines sustainable navigation with the discovery of one of Portugal's most important wetland ecosystems.

Sterna - Aveiro Ria Tours & Birdwatching is a nature and nautical tourism company based in Aveiro, Portugal, dedicated to revealing the natural beauty and rich biodiversity of the Ria de Aveiro. Operating across more than 200km of navigable waterways, Sterna offers visitors the chance to explore this sensitive estuarine ecosystem aboard a state-of-the-art, fully ecological boat powered solely by solar energy — silent and emission-free. The company offers a range of experiences, including the 'Duas Águas' tour, which explores some of the Ria's main channels, and the more immersive 'Esteiros' experience, venturing into wilder, less-traveled parts of the lagoon. Sterna also organizes dedicated birdwatching programs, taking advantage of the Ria de Aveiro's status as one of the most important wetlands on Portugal's northern coast, home to a great variety and abundance of wild birds. Special programs are also available for celebrations, sunset tours, and other bespoke occasions. Founded on the philosophy that 'silence is the new luxury,' Sterna emphasizes tranquility, harmony, and sustainability throughout the experience, welcomed by a knowledgeable and relaxed team. The project reflects a broader commitment to protecting the delicate estuarine environment formed by the delta of the Vouga River, promoting responsible, low-impact ways for visitors to connect with nature. Sterna operates under the registered brand of Popular Flamingo Unipessoal, Lda., and is licensed as a nature tourism operator (RNAAT 214/2020).

Our Goal

Sterna aims to offer unique, low-impact nature tourism experiences on the Ria de Aveiro, showcasing its natural beauty and rich biodiversity through silent, solar-powered boat tours.
